The popularity of trading cards has grown significantly since the release of Magic: The Gathering in 1993 and Pokémon TCG in 1996. With prices for many early and rare cards increasing substantially in recent years, trading card collectors want to be completely confident that their cards are genuine, accurately graded and preserved.
CGC Trading Cards provides this confidence through its expert and impartial authentication, grading and encapsulation services for virtually all Pokémon TCG and Magic: The Gathering cards.
CGC Trading Cards has assembled a team of expert trading card graders who, as collectors and players themselves, care deeply about providing comprehensive certification services that benefit the hobby. To ensure impartiality, CGC Trading Cards graders are prohibited from buying and selling collectibles commercially.
After a trading card has been authenticated and graded by CGC Trading Cards, it is encapsulated in the CGC Trading Cards holder, which provides the best in protection and display while being portable and easy to store.
CGC Trading Cards graders use a highly accurate, industry-standard 10-point grading scale and evaluate cards using advanced authentication and grading equipment, including devices that perform ultra-microscopic inspections and precisely calculate centering.
The CGC Trading Cards holder is made from the same time-tested, durable and optically superior materials as the CGC comic book holder. With crystal-clear optics, the artwork, color and detail of a card are never obscured.

In addition to its overall grade, a card is assigned grades for Centering, Corners, Edges and Surface. In order to be eligible for a “Perfect 10”, you need to have subgrades. Without subgrades, the highest grade you may receive is a “Pristine 10”.
Why should I get sub-grades?
Sub-grades identify the flaws on each card. This allow future buyers to make a better decision on how to value your card compare to others depending of what is important to each individual.
A card that has a printing error. Required for any card with a printing error.
A pedigree can be added to the certification label to indicate a card’s past or present ownership. To pedigree a card to a previous owner, that collector or collection must be considered to be significant by CGC Trading Cards and sufficient documentation must be provided to confirm the requested pedigree. You can pedigree a card to yourself, typically without providing any documentation.
A card in a PSA or Beckett holder is evaluated for CGC Trading Cards certification. The card will be removed from its holder and encapsulated by CGC Trading Cards only if CGC Trading Cards determines that the card will receive a CGC grade that is the same or higher than the grade assigned by the other grading service. If the card does not meet CGC Trading Cards’ standards, it will be returned in its original holder and the grading fee will be refunded less a $4 processing fee. Sub-Grades: If the card has been assigned sub-grades by the other grading service, it will be removed from its holder and encapsulated by CGC Trading Cards only if all of the sub-grades will be the same or higher with CGC Trading Cards. Cross at Any Grade: If you would like your PSA or Beckett-holdered card certified by CGC Trading Cards even if CGC Trading Cards determines that it will receive a lower grade, specify CROSS AT ANY GRADE.

The submission has arrived at CGC. The enclosed collectibles have been counted and entered in CGC’s computer system along with the submitter information, submission date and requested service. If there are multiple tiers of service, the collectibles have been separated by tier of service.
In the next step, a detailed description of each collectible will be entered in CGC’s computer system (a process commonly called “verification”). The collectibles will be separated from any paperwork that would identify the submitter and the submission will be prepared for grading.
Each collectible has now been described in detail in CGC’s computer system and checked against the submitter’s descriptions. A unique identification number has been assigned to each collectible based on the submission form number and line item number. These identification numbers are printed on temporary holders and will be used to track each collectible throughout CGC’s grading process.
Submissions are then arranged by service and received date so that they can be graded on a “first in-first out” basis by service type.
Collectibles are authenticated, graded and encapsulated. Once encapsulated, they are re-examined to verify that the grade and accompanying description is correct. The holder is also checked for defects such as scuffs or nicks.
